LP SCC Resolution on the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act

Whereas California has the largest tax burden of any state, and massive increases in taxes and fees are adding to the state’s sky-high cost of living;

Whereas the protections put in place in 1978 by Proposition 13 and subsequent votes of the people have over the years been undermined through a combination of amendments and the determination of politicians to find loopholes that will allow them to continue raising taxes;

Whereas the voters of California will have a chance to adopt the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act as a proposition on the November 2024 ballot;

Whereas the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act gives voters the right to vote on all state and local taxes;

Whereas the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act requires state legislation imposing any new or higher taxes to be put before voters in a statewide election, and enacted only if approved by a majority;

Whereas the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act closes tax loopholes at the local level; and

Whereas the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act will reinstate the two-thirds approval requirement for any new or higher “special taxes” proposed by initiative in a local election, while still maintaining the current majority vote requirement for general tax increases;

Therefore, be it resolved, that

The Libertarian Party of Santa Clara County endorses the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act and urges all Californians to vote in favor when it appears on the ballot.
